He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College attended the University of Virginia Medical School (which he attended via a full merit scholarship). At the University of Virginia Medical Center, he completed his training in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery. He then went to the University of Illinois at Chicago to complete a fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. After completing his Fellowship he joined the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania in 1997 where he is a Clinical Associate Professor and Director of Facial Plastic Surgery, Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery. He is a member of The American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, the Philadelphia Society of Facial Plastic Surgery and the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS).

Dr. Frankel is also an active member of the National Domestic Violence Project where he performs pro bono surgery, including nasal surgery on victims of abuse.
